Welcome back Indie Game Enthusiasts! Today, on Indie Game Update, we will continue our discussion from the previous week on what it takes to create an indie game!
Here are a few more pieces of advice. (Since TKD is a visual novel, this will be from the perspective of creating this specific game, but this advice can be applied to any game you desire to create.)
4. Watch Tutorials
My biggest roadblock when creating my game was figuring out how to go about game creation when I didn't know anything about the software I intended to use. In order to create my visual novel, I would practice with Ren’py and try out different elements, but what really took me to the next level was watching YouTube tutorials. I started with tutorials on the game user interface. Then I started working towards the elements of character creation and game choices. I mainly used YouTube to learn, but finding forums on reddit or listening to other game developer giving their own advice and tutorials helped tremendously.
5. Test other games on Itch.io
If you want to become a game developer you must play other developers games. Check and make a note on what interests you. Look at the comments and ratings for the games you are playing and see what the users enjoy and what they dislike. Playing other games will also give you ideas and inspiration for the development of you own game from the dialogue to the layout design.
*What if you aren’t a gamer?*
Would it surprise you to know I’m not a gamer either? (lol!)
The closest I’ve ever gotten to being a gamer was New Super Mario Bros, Mario 64, Savvy Style Trendsetter, and Fantage!
If you struggle to play games or have trouble with the games keeping your attention, you can always watch people play though games on YouTube. Watching another person react may be more interesting and entertaining.
That is all the advice I have for now!
Please interact with the poll! I would love to know what you think of Fantage!
Thank you for listening, and I hope you’ve gained some valuable insight!
